German Spitz puppies grow quickly and usually reach adult height at around 8 to 10 months, with full weight and coat by 12 to 15 months. Many go through an awkward phase somewhere between 4 and 10 months when the soft puppy coat drops out before the adult coat grows in. The puppy can look thin and scruffy for a few weeks, which is normal.
Small puppies are fragile. Keep them off high furniture, supervise them with children, and stop them jumping down from beds or sofas, as falls can injure legs and kneecaps. Start handling paws, ears and mouth daily so grooming and tooth brushing become routine. Contact your vet if a puppy skips on a back leg, holds a leg up, or seems weak and unusually sleepy after missing a meal.
