An adult of about 28 kg (62 lb) normally eats 320 to 450 g of dry food a day, roughly 3.5 to 5 cups, with working dogs in the hunting season at the top of the range or beyond. Measure daily portions and adjust weekly during periods of heavy work. Out of season, reduce the amount before extra weight appears.
Give the main meal after exercise, with at least an hour's rest, rather than just before a day's hunting. Like other deep-chested gundogs, the breed carries some bloat risk. The long ear feathering gets into food and water, so a bowl with a narrower opening helps, and a heavy, non-slip bowl suits a dog that eats with enthusiasm.
