Beauceron feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Beauceron.
Big bodies do not always mean big appetites. Many Beaucerons are moderate eaters, and a 40 kg (88 lb) male in regular exercise often needs around 400 to 500 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 4 to 5 cups. Farm dogs working through winter may need considerably more, while quiet pet dogs need less.
The breed is deep-chested, so bloat is a real concern. Feed two or three smaller meals rather than one large one, keep energetic play away from the hour after eating, and do not let your dog gulp huge amounts of water straight after a run. Save the number of your nearest out-of-hours vet in your phone.
A heavy bowl on a non-slip mat suits a dog of this size. Raised bowls are a comfort choice for older dogs with stiff necks rather than a bloat preventative, and some research has linked them to higher bloat risk in large breeds, so talk to your vet before choosing a height.
