Irish Water Spaniel feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Irish Water Spaniel.
An active adult weighing 27 kg (60 lb) typically needs about 300 to 380 g of dry food per day, roughly 3.5 to 4.25 cups, in two meals. Working dogs in cold weather may need 20 percent more, while dogs with lighter routines need less. Keep them lean; the curls hide a lot, so feel for the ribs rather than trusting your eyes.
The long ears and bearded face can trail into the bowl. A narrower, deep-sided bowl or a fabric snood during meals keeps the ear hair cleaner. Wipe and dry the face afterward, as damp facial hair mats quickly and starts to smell within a day.
Many IWS are hungry and hurried after a morning in the water. Allow at least 30 minutes to cool down before feeding, and consider a slow feeder if your dog bolts its food.
