Italian Greyhound feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Italian Greyhound.
Most adult IGs eat around 50 to 80 g of a quality dry food daily, roughly half to three quarters of a cup, split into two meals. Active dogs or those living outdoors in cooler weather may need a little more. Because the breed is naturally lean, owners sometimes worry their dog is too thin. Seeing the outline of two or three ribs and the hip bones slightly is normal for a sighthound.
Picky eating is common. Some IGs skip meals when stressed or when the room is busy, so a quiet feeding spot helps. A small, stable bowl that does not slide lets such a light dog eat without chasing it across the floor. Avoid leaving food out all day, as regular mealtimes make house training easier.
Crunchy food and chew items that are safe for small mouths can help a little with teeth, which is a real concern in this breed. Wet food alone tends to cling to the teeth. Whatever you feed, dental care has to come mostly from brushing.
