How much exercise does a Japanese Chin need?

Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Japanese Chin enjoys and signs of too much or too little.

Around 20 to 40 minutes a day is enough for most adults, split into two short walks plus some indoor play. A Chin enjoys a slow stroll through the park, chasing a soft toy down the hallway, or learning a new trick for a treat. It does not need long hikes, though a fit dog can manage a longer walk on a cool day.

Heat is the real limit. The flat face makes it harder to cool down by panting, so in summer walk early in the morning and late in the evening, and skip outings entirely on hot, humid days. Loud, labored breathing, a very dark red tongue, or a dog that lies down and refuses to go on are signals to stop, get somewhere cool and call a vet if breathing does not settle quickly. A harness is kinder than a collar for this breed.
