How much exercise does a Pekingese need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Pekingese enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Two short walks of 15 to 20 minutes a day, plus play indoors, suit most adults. Pekes enjoy pottering, sniffing and following their owner around the yard, and many like simple puzzle feeders. They are not built for jogging or long hikes, and forcing distance does more harm than good.
Heat and exertion are the real limits. Keep outings to the cool parts of the day in warm weather and stop well before your dog is tired. Loud, rasping breathing, a bluish or dark tongue, collapse or refusal to move are emergencies that need a vet at once. Use a harness rather than a collar to keep pressure off the throat. Weight gain and evening restlessness suggest too little activity; noisy breathing that takes more than a few minutes to settle suggests too much.
