Like most giant guardians, the Kuvasz is known to be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans (a cartilage problem in growing joints), hypothyroidism and bloat. Responsible breeders X-ray hips and elbows before breeding, and many also check thyroid function. Keeping dogs lean and avoiding over-exercise during growth helps protect joints.
Get to a vet immediately if your dog has a swollen or tight belly, retches without bringing anything up, drools heavily or seems restless and in pain, because bloat is an emergency. Book a regular appointment for limping, weight gain with low energy, or a dull, thinning coat.
