Training a Maltese: what works and what to expect
How the Maltese learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.
Maltese learn quickly when training feels like a game. Short sessions with tiny, soft treats and plenty of praise work well, and they shine at tricks such as spin, wave and go to bed. They are sensitive, so a raised voice can shut them down for the rest of the session.
House-training is the classic challenge. A small bladder, a dislike of rain and owners who scoop them up too quickly all slow progress. Take the puppy out after every meal, nap and play session, reward outdoors the moment it goes, and consider an indoor potty area for apartment life. Practice short absences of 1 to 5 minutes from the first weeks, so the dog learns that you always come back.
