Training a Pekingese: what works and what to expect
How the Pekingese learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.
Pekingese are clever, but they were never asked to take orders. They respond to gentle persuasion, food and routine rather than repetition, and a Peke that feels pushed tends to plant its feet. Keep sessions to a few minutes and focus on practical skills such as coming when called, accepting handling and walking on a harness.
House-training can take several months. Keep a fixed schedule, take the puppy out after sleeping and eating, and reward generously outside. Early, gentle handling of the face, eyes and feet makes lifelong grooming and vet visits far easier. Pekes can be possessive of favorite people or resting spots, so teach a cheerful 'off' and trade treats for toys rather than snatching them away.
