Training a Papillon: what works and what to expect

Papillons learn quickly and love to work with you. Short, upbeat sessions with food or toys build a rich repertoire of tricks and cues, and many dogs pick up hand signals easily. Because they are sensitive, heavy-handed methods tend to backfire and make them anxious.

The usual challenges are barking and house training. Teach a quiet cue early, reward calm behavior at windows and avoid shouting, which sounds like joining in. For toileting, frequent trips outside and a predictable schedule help; some owners also use an indoor pad area for very young puppies. Avoid carrying your dog everywhere, as it can become overprotective of your arms.
