Training an Affenpinscher: what works and what to expect

Affens are clever but independent and often stubborn. They respond best to short, playful sessions with food rewards and a clear routine, and poorly to raised voices. Expect to repeat basics more often than with eager-to-please breeds.

Expect housetraining to take several months, so take your puppy out often and reward generously. Teach a trade game for toys and chews early to prevent guarding, and practice calm handling of paws, mouth and beard. Socialization with gentle, larger dogs helps your Affen learn manners without learning to start fights.
