Training a Kuvasz: what works and what to expect

A Kuvasz learns quickly but tends to ask why before it obeys. Repetitive drills bore it, and harsh methods damage trust with a dog that remembers unfairness. Keep sessions short, rewarding and meaningful, and focus on essential life skills: loose-leash walking, calm greetings, waiting at doors and gates, and a solid recall inside enclosed areas.

Socialization is critical. From 8 to 20 weeks, introduce calm visitors, busy places, other animals and everyday sounds, and continue through adolescence. Teach the dog that you decide who enters the home, for example by having guests wait while you greet them first. Most breed clubs advise against a Kuvasz as a first dog.
