An adult Neo of around 65 kg (143 lb) typically eats 600 to 800 g of a giant-breed dry food per day, about 6 to 8 cups, but many are less active than their size suggests and need less. Split the ration into at least two meals, and consider three for dogs that eat fast. Keep the dog lean: extra weight on this frame quickly strains joints and heart.
Neapolitan Mastiffs are deep-chested and considered at risk of bloat, a life-threatening twisting of the stomach. Avoid exercise for an hour before and at least an hour after meals, prevent gulping with a slow feeder or by scattering part of the meal, and keep feeding calm. Whether a raised bowl helps or harms is debated, so discuss bowl height with your vet rather than guessing.
Expect mess. Drool and water fall from the lips with every drink, so a large, heavy, stainless steel bowl on a waterproof mat is sensible. Many owners keep towels by the bowl and wipe the jowls after meals, which also helps keep the lip folds clean.
