Newfoundland puppies go from around 0.5 to 0.7 kg (1 to 1.5 lb) at birth to 45 kg (100 lb) or more by their first birthday, then keep filling out until 2 years or later. Many 10-week-old puppies already weigh 10 to 14 kg (22 to 31 lb), so the days of carrying them around end very quickly.
Do not calculate a Newfoundland puppy's walking allowance from a five-minute-per-month formula. PDSA notes that this rule has no scientific basis. Build activity gradually, allow rest and avoid long forced outings during growth. Speak to your vet about the puppy's development and seek advice for limping, stiffness or reluctance to stand.
