Bichon Frise feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Bichon Frise.
A 6 kg (13 lb) adult Bichon typically needs 90 to 110 g of dry food per day, around one cup, given as two meals. Bichons enjoy food and put on weight readily, particularly after neutering, and the rounded coat hides extra padding well. Check by feel rather than by eye.
Fresh water should always be available, and it helps to place more than one bowl around the home. The breed is known to be prone to bladder stones, and a dog that drinks well produces more dilute urine. Adding a little water to dry food is an easy way to raise intake for dogs that are lazy drinkers.
The white beard picks up food and saliva, which turns the hair reddish over time. A stainless steel or ceramic bowl rinsed daily, and a quick wipe of the muzzle after meals, limits staining. Many owners find a shallow bowl keeps the beard cleaner than a deep one.
