Training a Parson Russell Terrier: what works and what to expect

Parsons are intelligent but not natural people pleasers. They learn a new cue quickly and then test whether you really mean it. Keep sessions short, fast and rewarding, and use play as often as food: a game of tug after a good recall can motivate more than any biscuit.

Expect to put the most work into recall, loose-lead walking and self-control around small animals. A solid 'leave it' and a reliable 'wait' at doors and gates can prevent accidents. Many Parsons also need help with frustration when they see other dogs on lead. Group classes and dog sports give structure and an outlet at the same time.
