Training a Shetland Sheepdog: what works and what to expect

Shelties are soft-natured learners. A sharp word can upset them for the rest of a session, while a cheerful voice, a small treat or a quick tug game keeps them keen. Because they learn so fast, endless repetition bores them; move on once a behavior is solid and revisit it later. Clicker training suits the breed particularly well.

Barking is the main challenge. Teach a quiet cue early, reward calm silence at the window, and avoid yelling, which a Sheltie tends to hear as you joining in. Socialize puppies widely between 8 and 16 weeks with gentle strangers, children and noisy places to prevent shyness later on.
