Training a Sealyham Terrier: what works and what to expect

Sealyhams are intelligent but not always cooperative. They weigh your request against their current plan, and repetition bores them quickly. Keep sessions short, reward with small tasty treats and make training feel like a game. Harsh methods usually lead to a dog that simply digs in.

Common challenges include digging, chasing small animals, guarding toys and patchy tolerance of other dogs, particularly between males. Early socialization with calm dogs, swap games for toys and a recall practiced on a long line help a great deal. Once trained, Sealyhams are dependable companions that enjoy trick training and even gentle obedience work.
