Pekingese grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Pekingese: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The long coat needs a thorough brush and comb three or four times a week, parting it in sections and working down to the skin, with daily attention behind the ears, under the legs and in the feathering on the hind legs, where mats form first. Many pet owners ask a groomer for a shorter trim, which is cooler in summer and easier at home. The undercoat sheds heavily once or twice a year.
Clean the wrinkle over the nose daily with a soft, damp cloth and dry it thoroughly, since damp folds become sore and smelly. Wipe gently around the eyes and keep hair clear of them. Tidy the hair around the rear end for hygiene, and trim nails and the fur between the pads every few weeks so your dog keeps its footing on smooth floors.
