Pekingese puppies grow steadily and reach adult size around 10 to 12 months, though the full mane can take until about 18 months to come in. Litters are small, often two or three puppies, and many are delivered by C-section because of the large head. That is one reason well-bred puppies are scarce and waiting lists are common.
Protect the back and eyes during growth. Discourage jumping on and off furniture, carry the puppy with one hand under the chest and the other under the hindquarters, and keep play with bigger dogs gentle. If a puppy yelps when picked up, walks hunched, has a wobbly back end, or has a watery, squinting or cloudy eye, take it to a vet the same day.
