Rough Collie health: what owners should know

Collie eye anomaly, an inherited condition present from birth that ranges from mild to serious, is strongly linked with this breed, as is progressive retinal atrophy. Many Rough Collies carry the MDR1 gene variant, which makes them dangerously sensitive to several common medicines, including some parasite treatments and anesthetic drugs. Dermatomyositis, a skin and muscle condition, and bloat are also recognized in the breed.

Reputable breeders DNA test for collie eye anomaly, PRA and MDR1, have each litter eye checked by a specialist, and often hip score. Once you know your dog's MDR1 status, tell every vet, groomer and pet sitter who might give it anything. See a vet for any hesitation in dim light, crusty sores on the face, ears or tail tip, or drooling, trembling or wobbliness after a new treatment. A swollen belly with unproductive retching is an emergency.
