Rough Collie feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Rough Collie.
Most adult Rough Collies eat moderately and are not the hardest breed to keep slim, but the coat hides a lot. A collie that looks perfect can be carrying 3 kg (7 lb) too much, so feel for ribs through the coat every couple of weeks. A 27 kg (60 lb) adult with normal activity usually needs about 280 to 360 g of dry food daily, roughly 3 to 3.5 cups, in two meals.
Some collies, particularly adolescent males, are picky. Resist switching foods or adding new toppers every time a meal is refused; a healthy dog eats when hungry, and a predictable routine of two fixed mealtimes, with the bowl lifted after 15 minutes, usually settles things. A dog that skips food for more than a day or starts losing weight should see a vet.
Collies are deep-chested, which places them among breeds with some risk of bloat, a twisting of the stomach that is a true emergency. Avoid hard exercise for an hour either side of meals, and use a slow feeder bowl if your dog gulps. A restless dog with a swollen belly that tries to vomit but brings nothing up needs a vet immediately.
