Samoyed grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Samoyed: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush two or three times a week in normal months, working in sections down to the skin with a slicker brush and following with a long-toothed metal comb or undercoat rake. Line brushing, where you part the coat and brush one strip at a time, avoids a common trap: a fluffy surface over a matted base. Give extra time to the fur behind the ears, the armpits, the britches (the thick fur on the back of the thighs) and the tail.
Once or twice a year the undercoat blows, and for two to three weeks you may need to brush daily. A high-velocity dryer, your own or a groomer's, blasts loose undercoat out and cuts the work dramatically. Bathe every two to three months at most, and dry thoroughly, because a damp undercoat against the skin can lead to sore, inflamed patches. Trim nails every two to three weeks and clip the fur between the pads so your dog does not slide on hard floors.
