Samoyed puppy growth: milestones and weight estimates

How fast a Samoyed puppy grows, illustrative weight estimates and the limits of predicting adult size.

Samoyed puppies look like cotton balls at 8 weeks and grow quickly, usually reaching around half their adult weight by 5 to 6 months. Height is mostly done by 12 months, but the chest, muscle and full adult coat keep developing until about 18 months to 2 years. Many owners are caught off guard by a gangly teenage stage, when the puppy coat drops out at around 6 to 10 months and the dog looks thin and scruffy for a while.

Hip dysplasia occurs in the breed, so protect growing joints: keep puppies lean, avoid long runs on hard surfaces and repeated leaps out of the car until about 12 to 18 months, and let them play at their own pace. Lameness that lasts beyond a day, a bunny-hopping gait at speed or an uneven way of sitting are reasons to see a vet.
