How much exercise does a Samoyed need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Samoyed enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
A healthy adult needs about 60 to 90 minutes a day, split into at least two outings. Samoyeds love hiking, canicross, bikejoring and pulling sports, and many clubs run dry-land sledding and carting events in spring and autumn. Off-lead reliability is often limited, so use enclosed fields or a long line; a Sammy that spots a cat may not come back until it has finished investigating.
Heat sets the limits. Once temperatures pass about 20°C (68°F), walk at dawn and after dusk, stay in the shade and carry water. Heavy panting with a wide, flattened tongue, stumbling or lying down on the walk are warning signs; get the dog somewhere cool and call a vet if it does not settle quickly. Never shave the coat to cool the dog, because the double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and may not regrow normally.
