Training a Scottish Terrier: what works and what to expect

How the Scottish Terrier learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Scotties were bred to make decisions alone underground, and they have not forgotten it. They learn quickly but decide for themselves whether a command is worth obeying. Food rewards, very short sessions and variety work far better than repetition, and physical corrections are likely to be met with a growl.

Start handling practice early: touch feet, ears, beard and belly every day with a treat, and grooming and vet visits become much easier later. Socialize with plenty of friendly dogs from puppyhood, since adult Scotties are often feisty with dogs they do not know.
