Skye puppies grow mainly in length and bone during the first year, reaching adult height at around 10 to 12 months and filling out until 15 to 18 months. The adult coat is slow to arrive: it can take 2 to 3 years to reach full length and texture, so a scruffy adolescent is normal.
One growth problem is specific enough to carry the breed's name: Skye limp, in which growth plates in the front legs close early and the legs can become bowed or uneven. Keep puppies lean, limit jumping, stairs and rough play in the first year, and see a vet promptly if you notice a limp, a front leg that bows or turns, or signs of pain when the leg is handled.
