Puppies grow rapidly and reach adult height by around 12 months, but the breed can take 18 months to two years to develop its full chest and muscle. During that time they are strong, clumsy and completely unaware of their own power. Teach calm greetings from day one, long before a 25 kg adult learns that jumping on guests gets attention.
Ask the breeder for proof of hearing tests on the litter, since a puppy deaf in one ear can go unnoticed for months. Keep an eye out for limping, bunny-hopping on the hind legs, or early signs of compulsive behavior such as fixated tail chasing or staring at shadows and lights. Mention any of these to a vet early, because repetitive habits are much easier to redirect before they become established.
