How fast a Portuguese Podengo puppy grows, illustrative weight estimates and the limits of predicting adult size.
Growth follows size. Pequenos reach adult weight at around 10 to 12 months, Médios at 12 to 15 months and Grandes at up to 18 months. All sizes stay puppyish and mischievous until roughly two years, and adolescence is when escape attempts and selective hearing peak.
Protect the joints during growth, particularly in the two larger sizes: avoid forced running and repetitive high jumping until the growth plates close. Pequenos should be discouraged from leaping off high furniture. If your puppy skips on a hind leg, limps for more than a day or seems stiff after rest, have a vet check it.
