Swedish Vallhund health: what owners should know

The Vallhund is generally a robust breed. Known predispositions include an inherited eye disease called Vallhund retinopathy, a slowly progressing degeneration of the retina, and hip dysplasia. Responsible breeders have eyes examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist and hips X-rayed and scored before breeding.

A lean body protects the back and hips, and regular dental care helps these dogs stay healthy well into their teens. See a vet if you notice your Vallhund bumping into objects in dim light, hesitating before jumps or stairs, standing with a hunched back, or yelping when picked up.
