Bearded Collie health: what owners should know

Hardy as they are, Bearded Collies do have known weak points: hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and autoimmune conditions including Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism) all appear in the breed. Some inherited eye problems and skin allergies are also reported.

Breeders who take health seriously hip score their dogs, have eyes examined and are open about any autoimmune disease in their lines. Weekly grooming doubles as a health check, since you will find lumps, sore skin or parasites early. See your vet if your Beardie shows unexplained tiredness, vomiting that comes and goes, weight loss or weakness, because these vague signs can point to conditions that are easy to miss.
