Training a Tibetan Mastiff: what works and what to expect

How the Tibetan Mastiff learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Tibetan Mastiffs are intelligent but independent. They were bred to make decisions without human direction, so they often ask why before obeying. Short sessions, calm consistency and food rewards work best. Harsh methods tend to damage the relationship and increase stubbornness.

Socialization is critical. From 8 weeks onwards, introduce your puppy to a wide range of people, places and sounds, and keep doing so into adulthood. Teach a reliable recall in a fenced area, a solid down stay and polite greetings. Even with good training, most TMs will never accept strangers entering your home without your clear guidance, so plan introductions with care and use secure fencing at all times.
