Tibetan Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Tibetan Terrier.

A typical adult weighing 11 kg (24 lb) needs roughly 140 to 180 g of dry food per day, around 1.5 to 2 cups, split into two meals. They are usually sensible eaters, but the long coat hides weight gain, so run your hands over the ribs regularly to check condition.

Many Tibetan Terriers have long facial hair that falls into the bowl. A narrower bowl, or tying the topknot back at mealtimes, keeps the beard cleaner and reduces staining. Wipe the face after meals and dry it well, since damp hair near the mouth can smell and discolor.

Some owners find adult dogs eat less in hot weather and more in winter. Small seasonal changes of 10 percent or so are normal, but a sudden drop in appetite lasting more than two days deserves a call to your vet. Keep treats modest too, since a dog of this size only needs a few small rewards to cover a whole training session.
