Weimaraner feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Weimaraner.
Active adults usually eat around 350 to 450 g of dry food a day, roughly 3.5 to 4.5 cups, split into two meals. Working dogs in the shooting season may need considerably more, while a pet that only gets pavement walks needs less than the bag suggests. Check shape every couple of weeks: a Weim should look athletic with a clear tuck-up at the belly, not square.
Deep-chested sporting breeds are prone to bloat, so plan meals around exercise. Feed at least an hour before or after a hard run, avoid one huge daily meal, and slow down a dog that bolts its food with a puzzle bowl or a scatter feed. Weimaraners are also accomplished thieves; keep bread, butter and chocolate well out of reach and never assume a worktop is too high for a dog that can stand at 1.8 m (6 ft).
