Welsh Springer Spaniel feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Welsh Springer Spaniel.
An adult Welsh Springer of 20 kg (44 lb) usually needs 230 to 300 g of dry food daily, about 2.25 to 3 cups, in two meals, depending on activity. Working dogs during the shooting season may need a good deal more, while pet dogs in a quiet winter often need less. Adjust by body condition, not by the feeding guide on the bag.
Most Welshies are keen eaters, and some are accomplished scavengers on walks. A slow feeder or scattering kibble in the grass makes meals last longer and puts the nose to work. Weigh treats used in training and subtract them from the daily ration.
Those long ears dangle into bowls. A narrower, deeper bowl, or a fabric snood during meals, keeps the ear leather clean and dry and cuts down on the damp, food-crusted ears that can lead to irritation.
