Whippet feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Whippet.
A healthy Whippet looks thinner than most owners expect: you should see the outline of two or three ribs and the points of the hip bones. Around 170 to 230 g of dry food a day, roughly 1.75 to 2.25 cups, suits a typical 13 kg adult, split into two meals. Very active dogs, and those that struggle to hold weight through winter, may need more.
Some Whippets are fussy eaters, others inhale everything. Warming the food a little or stirring in a spoonful of plain cooked meat often tempts a picky one, while a slow-feeder bowl helps the gulpers. Because the breed has almost no fat in reserve, a Whippet that skips more than a day or two of meals, or loses weight you can see along the spine, should be checked by a vet.
