Whippet puppies grow quickly and look gangly between four and eight months, often with legs that seem too long for the body. Most reach full height at 10 to 12 months and fill out by 14 to 18 months. A healthy puppy looks ribby next to other breeds, and that is normal.
During growth, limit repeated hard sprints on firm ground and do not encourage jumping down from height. Short bursts of play on grass are fine and help coordination. Because puppies are fast and fearless, sprains and skin tears are common: a limp that lasts more than 24 hours, or a cut that gapes open, should be seen by a vet.
