How much exercise does a Whippet need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Whippet enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Quality matters more than duration with this breed. A daily total of 45 to 60 minutes is enough for most adults, provided it includes the chance to sprint flat out a few times a week in a securely fenced field, a hired dog paddock or at a lure coursing club. Two or three 30-second bursts often satisfy a Whippet completely; the rest can be a steady walk.
Choose running spaces with care. At full speed a Whippet can hit a post, another dog or a barbed-wire fence before it has time to react, and its thin skin splits easily. Use a fitted coat for walks in cold or wet weather. Under-exercise shows up mildly, usually as restlessness and indoor zoomies, while a Whippet that suddenly lags behind on a familiar route may be sore somewhere.
