Xoloitzcuintli grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Xoloitzcuintli: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
No brushing, almost no shedding and no trimming. Hairless Xolos need skin care instead. Bathe every two to four weeks with a mild dog shampoo, rinse thoroughly and apply an unscented, non-greasy moisturizer if the skin looks dry. Too many baths or heavy creams clog pores and cause blackheads, so it takes a little experimenting to find the balance your dog's skin likes.
The coated variety needs only a weekly rub with a rubber mitt. For both coat types, clean the teeth several times a week, since hairless Xolos may have fewer and less firmly anchored teeth. Trim nails every two to three weeks; many Xolos dislike having their feet handled, so start short, treat-filled sessions in puppyhood. Wipe the large upright ears when they look waxy.
