How much exercise does a Xoloitzcuintli need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Xoloitzcuintli enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
A standard Xolo is content with about 45 to 60 minutes a day of walking and play, and it relishes a good sprint in a secure area. Miniatures and toys need less distance but just as much variety. The breed is athletic and quick, and many enjoy agility, lure coursing, rally obedience and long hikes, as long as their skin is protected.
Weather shapes the routine. In strong sun hairless dogs can burn, particularly those with light or pink skin, so walk in the early morning or evening and choose shaded routes; ask your vet which sun protection is safe for dogs. In cold or wet weather below about 10°C (50°F), a coat or jumper keeps a hairless dog comfortable. Shivering, reluctance to keep walking or curling up tightly on cold days are clear signs your Xolo needs a warmer layer.
