Training a Xoloitzcuintli: what works and what to expect
How the Xoloitzcuintli learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.
Xolos are intelligent, sensitive and rather independent. They learn quickly with rewards and calm handling but switch off with raised voices or repetitive drills. Keep sessions short, reward generously and weave training into daily life rather than treating it as a formal lesson.
The most important work is socialization. Introduce your puppy calmly to visitors, children, other dogs and busy streets during the first 16 weeks and well beyond, without forcing contact. A well-socialized Xolo is polite and watchful with strangers; a poorly socialized one can become anxious or defensive. Recall is usually decent, but their climbing and jumping skills mean garden fences of about 1.8 m (6 ft) are wise.
