Australian Cattle Dog grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Australian Cattle Dog: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The coat is low maintenance most of the year: a weekly brush with a slicker or rubber brush removes dead hair. Twice a year, ACDs blow their undercoat, shedding heavily for two to three weeks, when daily brushing with an undercoat rake keeps the fluff under control.
Baths are rarely needed more than every couple of months, as the coat sheds dirt well. Trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks, check ears weekly, and look over paws after work in rough terrain. Because they are so tough, ACDs may hide small injuries, so a quick hands-on check after long outings is a smart habit.
