How much exercise does an Alaskan Klee Kai need?

Daily exercise minutes, the activities an Alaskan Klee Kai enjoys and signs of too much or too little.

Plan on about 45 to 60 minutes of exercise a day for a standard, a little less for a toy, mixing walks, play and short training games. Size fools people here: a 6 kg Klee Kai has far more stamina than a 6 kg lapdog and will happily trot 5 to 8 km (3 to 5 miles) on a cool morning. Agility, rally, canicross, scentwork and trick training all suit the breed, and a flirt pole in the garden burns off energy in ten minutes.

Like the bigger huskies, Klee Kai are rarely reliable off lead, so use fenced areas or a long line. They cope poorly with heat; in summer, walk early and late and cut the pace when temperatures pass about 22°C (72°F). Heavy panting, lagging behind or seeking shade mid-walk mean it is time to stop. An under-exercised Klee Kai howls, digs under fences and redecorates cushions.
