How much exercise does an Australian Cattle Dog need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities an Australian Cattle Dog enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Plan for at least 90 to 120 minutes of activity a day for an adult ACD, combining physical exercise with brain work. This can include running, hiking, fetch, flirt pole games, herding lessons, agility, flyball or trick training. The breed was built to work all day, so a 20 minute stroll barely registers.
Mental stimulation is essential. Teaching new tricks, scent work and puzzle toys all help channel their intelligence. Watch for over-exertion in hot weather, as many ACDs will keep going long after they should stop; heavy panting, lagging behind or a bright red tongue are signs to rest and cool down. A dog that is under-exercised often shows it by pacing, nipping or destructive behavior.
