Miniature American Shepherd grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Miniature American Shepherd: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush once a week with a pin brush and an undercoat rake, and more often during the twice-yearly shed, when the undercoat can come out in clumps. The soft hair behind the ears and on the rear legs mats most easily, so give those spots a quick comb every few days. Full baths are needed only every one to two months.
Trim nails every two to three weeks, since a small, light dog doesn't always wear them down on walks. Keep the hair between the pads short for grip. Check ears weekly, especially after swimming, and pay attention to teeth: smaller herding breeds benefit from daily or near-daily brushing, and dental chews are not a full substitute.
