Pug feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Pug.
A typical 7 kg (15 lb) adult Pug needs only about 90 to 120 g of dry food daily, roughly 1 to 1.3 cups, split into two meals. That is less than most owners expect, and the breed's pleading face makes overfeeding very easy. Weigh portions on a kitchen scale rather than scooping by eye, and count treats as part of the daily total.
Weight is not a cosmetic issue for Pugs. Every extra kilogram adds fat around the throat and chest, which makes breathing harder. You should be able to feel the ribs under a thin layer of padding and see a slight tuck at the belly. If your Pug is gaining, reduce portions by about 10 percent and recheck in three weeks.
Flat-faced dogs pick up kibble differently. A shallow, wide bowl lets a Pug reach food without pressing its face into the sides, and small, flat kibble shapes are easier to grip. Some Pugs eat more comfortably when the bowl is raised a little. Wipe the facial wrinkles after meals, since crumbs trapped in the folds can cause soreness.
