Basset Hound grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Basset Hound: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The short coat is easy: a rubber mitt or soft bristle brush once or twice a week clears dead hair, and shedding picks up in spring and autumn. Bathe every 4 to 8 weeks, or whenever the hound smell starts to fill the room. Pay attention to the folds around the lips and neck, which trap saliva and moisture, and dry them after meals.
Ears are the real grooming job. Long, heavy ears block air from reaching the canal, so check and gently wipe the outer ear each week and dry them after swimming or bathing. Trim nails every 2 to 3 weeks, because the heavy body puts extra pressure on the feet. Keep a drool towel handy too, since the loose lips drip after every drink.
