Basset puppies grow in bone and length faster than in height, and they are endearingly clumsy while they do it. Most reach full height by around 12 months but keep adding weight and depth of chest until 18 to 24 months. It is common for a 10-week-old pup to already weigh 4 to 7 kg.
Because the body is heavy and the legs are short, a growing Basset should not make a habit of jumping off sofas, leaping out of cars or climbing long staircases. Carry young puppies with one arm under the chest and the other under the rear, never by the front legs. Limping, a front foot that turns out much more than its partner, or reluctance to walk after a rest in a young dog all deserve a vet visit.
