Beardie puppies grow at a moderate pace, reaching adult height by about 12 months and filling out until 18 months or two years. Color changes can be dramatic: a black puppy may turn silvery gray by its first birthday, then darken slightly again by three. The adult coat takes around three years to reach full length.
The hardest grooming stretch runs from roughly 9 to 18 months, when the puppy coat sheds out and the adult coat grows in, and mats can form almost overnight. Short daily brushing sessions through this phase save a lot of trouble. Protect growing joints by avoiding forced running and repeated jumping before 12 months, and have a vet check any puppy with a limp that persists or stiffness after rest.
